Yes, our State Champs are on the Father’s Day weekend. Bring your dad along for a bonding weekend – compete with him, or leave him to read a book, paint, do a spot of photography, go for a walk or two, or volunteer at the Hash House. Or if you’re a dad, bring your kid/s (and possibly their mum) for a fun camping weekend.
The good news is that this 24-hour event is only 3 hours or 250km from Gepps Cross. It’ll be one of our closest State Champs to the city for years, so don’t miss it!
The event is situated on Tuilkilkey Station, 35km east of Terowie in the Mid-North, just north of Burra. It has some flat land and some not so flat land, but nothing too dramatic in elevation. Lots of good open space for fast moving, with some lovely creeklines and majestic gum trees. There will be lots of close controls for the families who join us and more difficult controls set on the outer edges of the map. The station is accessed by a good dirt road suitable for 2-wheel drives.
And while this is our State Championship event, and there will be keen beans out to win the fence post trophies, most of us just enjoy getting out in nature, exploring a new area in South Australia and testing ourselves with the navigation. Yes, you can stay out for the full 24-hours and not have a nap, or you can choose to come back into the Hash House for dinner, a sleep and brekkie before heading back out. Alternatively, you can enter the 12-hour roving event where you can compete for a maximum of 12-hours within the 24-hour period. Your adventure is your own – you choose how you want to spend your 24-hours.Â
Novices are welcome as well as those rogainers who have only ever done city events. Come and try navigating by contours and watercourses, instead of roads. The setters will be available to help you learn how to interpret the features on a topographical map and how best to plan your route and execute it. Don’t be afraid to ask for help at Admin when you register.
Camping is available for the Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. If you plan to compete the full 24-hours, we strongly suggest you consider how to get yourself home safely after the event. Bring your dad to drive you home or plan to stay over on Sunday night also. Saturday dinner, Sunday breakfast and Sunday lunch are all catered for and included in your entry fees. Extra non-competing family or friends can join us for meals for just a small price.
We hope to see you at Tuilkilkey in September!
