Rogaining thrives on teamwork, endurance, and strategy. But behind every successful event is a small army of volunteers making it all possible. And too often, that army is mostly… older participants themselves.
Many of these veterans of the sport, still impressively fit and passionate, are not only competing but also setting courses, organising logistics, and packing gear trailers. At the recent State Champs, six over 70-year-olds plus a few under 70s committee members spent almost four-hours cleaning up and packing the two SARA trailers, AFTER they’d just finished competing in the 24-hour event.
Without fresh volunteer energy, they’re forced to carry the physical and mental load of running events — when really, they should be enjoying the challenge they’ve spent decades supporting.
That’s where you come in.
Volunteering for rogaining doesn’t require elite fitness or expert navigation skills. From hanging controls before an event or collecting controls after (with a GPS in hand), to registration, catering, driving safety loops, and post-event clean-up, there are roles for everyone. By stepping up, you’re not just giving back — you’re helping keep rogaining sustainable and inclusive.
Plus, volunteers often gain behind-the-scenes insight, connect with seasoned rogainers, and become part of a tight-knit, adventure-loving community.
Imagine an event where the older generation, who’ve kept rogaining alive for decades, can finally relax, compete, or mentor — instead of running every detail. With more volunteers on board, that vision becomes reality.
So whether you’re a friend, a first-timer, or a future competitor, lending a hand at the next rogaining event could make all the difference.
Rogaining needs volunteers. The sport’s future — and its hardworking legends — are counting on it.
Footnote: One treasured older couple consistently stays behind each bush rogaine to walk the course and collect controls. One of them was supposed to have chemotherapy for their cancer in the week before the rogaine. They postponed this so they could compete and stay on for Monday to assist collecting controls before heading back to Adelaide for their chemo on Tuesday. Our sport depends on beautiful people like this. Please consider how you could assist at one rogaine in 2026. Every little bit helps enormously.
